Tenth Annual Cinderella Project serves more than 300 girls

Two hours before the doors opened, high school girls lined up around the block at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church to have first pick of hundreds of free prom dresses offered by the Cinderella Project. The beautiful pink, beaded gown displayed at the door was just a sample of all the gorgeous dresses they would find within.

More than 300 girls were served, most of whom went home with dresses, plus jewelry, shoes and formal wraps, and immediately, Cinderella Project volunteers began to plan for next year’s event.

Along with Charleston high schools, the girls came from Wando and Summerville, and as far away as Beaufort and St. Stephen. One father came all the way from North Carolina to help his daughter select a dress. Participants and their families enjoyed a party atmosphere with refreshments, music, goodie bags, and prizes located by area businesses, as well as their choice of gowns.

Alissa Collins, Event Chair, and her committee, plus scores of volunteers are to be commended for the hours they contributed to this effort. The Cinderella Project is sponsored by the Outreach Center at St. Matthew’s and the Young Lawyers Division of the South Carolina Bar, along with a number of community partners including Maddison Row and Bella Bridesmaid. It is dedicated to building the self-esteem of teenage girls by providing them with formal wear for the special occasions in their lives.
